Google’s Helpful Content Update - What You Should Know

As of August 25, 2022, Google has started rolling out a sitewide algorithm update.

Called the 'helpful content' update, the algorithm devalues content written for search engines in order to prioritize content that’s people first.

But isn’t all content written for people?

More importantly, hasn’t Google already been ranking content that has better engagement higher?

Simply put, Google is now deploying machine learning to lower the rankings of SEO-friendly websites with content that does not demonstrate subject expertise.

Basically, ‘general’ content that does not answer a real query is no longer going to help you rank higher. Read more on this directly on Google’s documentation.

Here’s what else we know:

  • The update is not manual. The process is automated using a machine-learning model.

  • It is sitewide, and not restricted to a few pages.

  • People-first content will continue to rank even if it’s published on sites with unhelpful content.

  • The signal is weighted, meaning some sites get hit harder than others.

  • To begin with, only English searches will be impacted.

But how do you use it? And what are the top 5 WOMM strategies you can try now?

P.S. Last week, we mentioned that your Facebook community and comments are your biggest assets. Turns out they're useful for more reasons than one!

#FeaturedAd - The Ridge

Brand: The RidgeCategory: AccessoriesFormat: Video

WHY IT WORKS:

The unboxing format, combined with UGC-style “3 reasons to try” make for a thumb-stopping ad.

It’s very difficult to ignore a product that knows its purpose (!)) and tells you exactly why you should try it. Even better, the ad uses the user-generated content format to explain these reasons with short, quick cuts that use bold lettering to highlight key points. All within 30 seconds.

After all, who wouldn’t at least look at a wallet that is risk-free, sleek, and environment-friendly? And it’s available in different colors too. Win!
