You’re Not Collecting Enough Data From Your Shoppers
Conventional wisdom dictates you reduce friction.
Especially when asking your website visitors to sign up for emails.
After all, more steps = more friction, right?
WRONG.
Asking more questions will not affect your signup rate negatively.
Check out this great thread by @EcomMikeGalvin:
Unpopular eCommerce opinion: Collect more data at signup.
Most people are scared to do more than this:
- Offer a discount
- Collect an email addressThat’s because they instinctually think people will drop off.

As his A/B test with sign-up forms shows, there is no significant difference in the number of sign-ups even with a longer list of questions.
AND there’s suddenly tons more data from qualified shoppers to work with.
Honestly, we’re shocked we didn’t think of testing this sooner! 🫢
BONUS: What Mike hints at but doesn’t tell you is the positive impact it has on the welcome flow conversion rate. If you’ve asked the right questions, you know exactly what your shoppers are looking for!

Test Now: Ad Creatives That Don’t Feature Your Product
Does every ad you run feature your products?
It may be time to test ads that don’t!
Hear it from @ashvinmelwani, whose brand of nutrition supplements is killing it:
What if I told you that our top performing ads rn don’t even have our product in them?
Sounds crazy but hear me out:
It looks like a super organic FB post - but all we’re doing is pulling reviews from our community & using them as the ad
It’s a little clickbaity but it’s… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Crazy, isn’t it?
Wait till you see the numbers:
Some stats from two tests we ran in the last 7 days.
1) No product shown or mentioned
$1.97 CPOC
CVR 4.57%
CPA $432) Product Shown/usual ads
$2.53 CPOC
CVR 4.96%
CPA $51Lower CVR but more traffic flooding in, better CPA.

Now we’re curious to see the creatives for ourselves.
But since Ash won’t tell, take a look at his ad library and see for yourself.
#FeaturedAd - Birdy Grey
Brand: Birdy Grey
Category: Apparel
Format: Video (Feed & Story)
WHY IT WORKS:
Another week, another short video ad to inspire you.
This 12-second Birdy Grey video keeps things simple: a great hook, a product showcase (really it’s just a slow-motion video of a rack of dresses), and their USPs.
Beginning with a great, FOMO-inspiring hook “why bridesmaids are obsessed” with their dresses, the ad then uses bold text to highlight their USPs.
But here’s the thing. They know their strengths.
Not only do they have great prices ($99 for custom/coordinated bridesmaid dresses is quite unbeatable), their 7-day shipping promise doesn’t hurt either!
Plus, they do sizes up to 3X.
By this point, we’re clicking through just to take a look!
